After an incredible SS27 show by Matthieu Blazy, here are a few things you might have missed.
1.The meaning of the birds
A nod to an Italian village where Blazy likes to vacation, which also serves as a stop for migratory birds, the birds represent freedom as well as the many different chapters of Coco Chanel’s life.
2.Tailoring to tweed
Growing up in the late Edwardian era, Chanel rejected the stiff tailoring of the era and experimented with menswear, which led to her creating her own version of the suit: the tweed set. References to this background in tailoring and the start of Chanel’s design legacy can be seen in this collection with the use of contrast ribbons to emphasise boning channels.
3.Multitudes of women, multitudes of outfits.
One of the critiques to Blazy’s Chanel debut were his mostly boxy silhouettes. A noticeable difference in this collection is the amount of variation in shapes, textures and colours; from boxy to formfitting, from cropped to long, from sheer to opaque, and from multi to single colour, this collection is one many women can see themselves in.
4.Textile innovation
Look 81, an aquamarine two-piece, presents us with smocked tweed. Organza and silk ruched into a honeycomb pattern, compressed and gathered to take up the appearance of tweed. A tweed that stretches with the body and that took a year and a half of testing. It will be interesting to see what Blazy will do next with it.
5.The importance of fun
Many have applauded and rushed to the store for Blazy’s fun colourful pieces and with a soundtrack containing Gimme More by Britney Spears, fun is very much at the forefront. Not an afterthought, but an intention. Blazy told the press “I think there is a space for poetry, beauty, joy, and it’s a good remedy to the dark times.”
